Description

Under direction, to supervise nutrition professionals, technical and office support nutrition staff; and to plan, implement and administer activities related to a major nutrition program within the Public Health Department.
Typical Tasks

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, orients, trains, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines Public Health Nutritionists and other staff;
  • Ensures appropriate staffing levels to fulfill business, language and service needs in assigned sites;
  • Ensures subordinates' adherence to all applicable policies, regulations and safety protocols;
  • Audits program records for completeness and accuracy in compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations and requirements;
  • Develops and delivers staff trainings related to operational and programmatic compliance measures, nutrition education and obesity prevention principles and strategies;
  • Conducts or supervises nutrition and breastfeeding education presentations for individuals, families, agencies and communities throughout the County;
  • Leads community-based research, social marketing, leadership groups and coalitions;
  • Identifies and procures resources, equipment, and materials necessary for business needs;
  • Contributes to grant and budget development and required reports;
  • Monitors demographic data and nutritional trends to assist in program development;
  • Maintains liaison and represents the program in meetings with public and private agencies and community groups and organizations;
  • Conducts nutrition assessments and develops nutrition education plans;
  • Screens and monitors participants at high nutritional risk and develops a case management plan for individual care, including counseling and follow-up;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Employment Standards
Training and Experience Note:  The required knowledge and abilities are attained through possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or a related field
 
AND

Four (4) years of experience as a nutritionist in a public or private health agency or as a Registered Dietitian at a hospital or clinic. One (1) year of experience must have been in a lead/supervisory capacity. Possession of a Master's Degree in Public Health, Nutrition or a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of required experience.

Special Requirements:
Certification as a Registered Dietitian (RD)/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Possession of a California Driver's License prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Driver's Permit.

Knowledge of:

  • Personnel management principles and techniques, including selection, hiring, supervision, evaluation, discipline, training and staff development;
  • Standard program evaluation methods and report writing procedures;
  • Current research, trends, and methodologies in the field of human nutrition, and its relationship to health and disease prevention;
  • Principles and techniques of learning theory, teaching methods, and organizing and motivating groups/individuals;
  • Administrative principles of organizational management, budgetary development, and program administration;
  • Nutrition practices, assessment and education strategies;
  • Computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

Ability to:

  • Supervise, direct, train, develop and motivate staff;
  • Plan, organize, and evaluate a health promotion program;
  • Develop appropriate nutrition plans for individuals or for program presentations;
  • Maintain a culturally sensitive approach to consulting with groups or individuals with diverse backgrounds;
  • Perform needs assessments and monitor/identify demographic data and trends;
  • Integrate the nutrition component into Public Health programs and services;
  • Evaluate, plan coordinate and conduct in-service training and presentations for professional and paraprofessional staff;
  • Develop short and long range budget plans that accurately reflect program needs;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff and health care professionals at all levels, other health agencies/providers, and the general public.
