Location: Remote

Hiring Range: This position pay range is anticipated to be $80,000 to $90,000 annually, depending on experience.

Position Summary: The Public Relations Strategist develops, supports, and executes a wide variety of public relations activities that support Best Friends Animal Society, with an emphasis in media relations, campaign and message development.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Take responsibility and accountability for the culture you add to your team dynamic.
  • Create and execute public relations tactics to build awareness of Best Friends' lifesaving work and thought leadership around the United States by writing and developing unique press releases, pitches, OpEds, fact sheets, bios, media briefings, and more while managing messaging strategies and distributions.
  • Develop, maintain, and leverage critical relationships with national, regional and local media outlets.
  • Use our comprehensive industry data to drive storytelling and shape integrated communications strategies.
  • Manage media shoots, serve as a Best Friends spokesperson and/or message train appropriate staff as needed to promote a myriad of topics, including hot button issues in the news cycle, thought leadership and other animal welfare focused topics/issues.
  • Analyze coverage of animal welfare issues in various media outlets and provide strategic communication counsel to senior leaders on thought leadership opportunities.
  • Partner with cross-functional internal teams such as marketing, social, creative, advocacy, celebrity relations, corporate relations, and programming to create and ensure delivery of compelling messaging and maximum exposure for Best Friends.
  • Seek out national and regional and local media opportunities as well as serve as a mentor and partner for local Network Partners.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to create relevant media opportunities (BFAS events, positions, thought leadership and animal story telling).
  • Spotlight and drive awareness for major partnerships and initiatives.

Skills and Experience:

  • Communications agency experience in a public relations role preferred, but not required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and ability to switch tactics midstream based on real time feedback.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to handle and be exposed to sensitive information and confidential situations.
  • Established media relationships in different verticals including business and technology.

Excellent computer skills with experience in MS office.

  • Ability to be a spokesperson on behalf of the organization and prepare a spokesperson for an interview.
  • Comfortable interacting and communicating with senior and executive leadership.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends position on issues.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some weekends and evenings.
  • Ability to sit and view computer screen for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
